Why is my soy candle frosting?
What you see: white, crystalline patches or a frosty film on the surface — most common on soy and other natural waxes.
Why it happens: natural waxes form crystal structures as they cool, and temperature swings during cooling or storage push those crystals to the surface. It's chemistry, not a mistake.
The fix: none needed — frosting is purely cosmetic and many buyers of natural candles expect it. Prevention (if it bothers you): pour cooler, cool slowly without temperature swings, and store finished candles away from heat and sunlight. A heat gun waved briefly over the surface can melt the frost layer smooth, but it'll often come back.
Worked example
Two tins from the same pour: one cools on a warm counter in a steady room, one cools near a drafty window on a cold night. A week later the window tin wears a white, frosty film and the counter tin doesn't. Same wax, same fragrance load — the only difference was temperature swing during cooling and storage. That is frosting doing exactly what soy crystals do.
Common questions
What is candle frosting?
Frosting is the white, crystalline film that appears on natural soy candles.
It's the wax forming crystals as it cools and ages, pushed to the surface by
temperature changes. It changes nothing about how the candle burns.
Is frosting on a soy candle a defect?
No. Many makers and buyers treat it as proof the candle is real soy with no
additives hiding the wax's natural behavior. It is cosmetic only.
How do you stop soy candles from frosting?
You can reduce it: pour a little cooler, cool slowly with no temperature
swings, and store finished candles away from heat and sun. A heat gun waved
over the top melts it smooth — though it may return, and that's fine.
Does frosting affect scent throw?
No. Frosting is a surface crystal pattern; it does not change fragrance load,
cure, or how the candle throws hot or cold.
